On October 2019, a new performance appeared in the repertoire of Arts Center “Saint-Michel”. Mikhail Venshchikov offered the audience his own rendition of the story of femme fatale Carmen, performed in two acts to the music of Georges Bizet.
Unlike the world-famous productions of “Carmen” by Roland Petit and Alberto Alonso which are in the form of one-act ballets, the Art Center version is a developed drama with many dance numbers. In addition to fragments from the opera of the same name, the musical score includes numbers from the orchestral suite “L’Arlèsienne”, overtures “Homeland” (Patrie), opera “Don Procopio” and other works by Bizet.
The main parts in the ballet were performed by the Winner of International competitions Oksana Bondareva (Carmen); the soloist of Mikhailovsky Theatre Denis Aliyev (Jose); the leading soloist of the Latvian National Opera Sergey Neikshin (Torero); and from Germany, Laura Tiffany Schmid (Gypsy fortune teller).
The premiere took place on October 28 at the Stadsshouwburg Theatre in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium. Performances were also held in the cities of Antwerp, Namur, and Brussels.
